What We Do and Why It Matters
Creating Spaces for Expression and Empowerment
At HYPE Media,
we are deeply committed to empowering Black girls by providing them with the tools, platform, and community to express themselves creatively and assertively. Our work revolves around harnessing the power of digital media as a means of self-expression, advocacy, and narrative control. Through initiatives like social media campaigns, digital storytelling, podcasting, and (re)mapping projects, we empower our participants to explore their identities, share their stories, and impact their communities positively.
Why It's Essential
The empowerment of Black girls is not just an act of individual growth but a transformative force for entire communities and society at large. Historically, the narratives surrounding Black girls, women, and communities have been shaped by external forces, often leading to stigmatization and marginalization. By centering the voices and experiences of Black girls in media creation, we challenge these narratives, offering new perspectives and possibilities.

OUR TEAM
The strength of HYPE Media lies in its collaborative spirit. We are a dynamic partnership between the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Education, School of Social Work, Homewood Community Engagement Center, Center for Urban Education, and the Homewood Children’s Village. This multi-disciplinary collaboration underscores our holistic approach to education and community engagement.
Our team is a vibrant mix of talent and dedication, including students from Westinghouse Academy, and a host of community supporters from across Pittsburgh.
Guided by the wisdom and expertise of University of Pittsburgh professor, Dr. Khirsten L. Scott, along with invaluable contributions from community partners like JaLissa Coffee at the Homewood Children’s Village and her team, faculty collaborators like Dr. Jamie Booth from the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Social Work, and University of Pittsburgh graduate and undergraduate students, our collective effort is a testament to the power of community in driving change.
